Coffee Specialist Only
Entrancing coffee × Magical thick-cut toast = Perfect breakfast
Coffee × Toast.
Japan started trading with the world around 150 years ago. Ever since, this breakfast combo from the West has taken root around the country. The Tokyo breakfast we’re about to introduce is very much in this style.
Now, we know what you’re thinking.
“Why coffee and toast in Tokyo?”
“Surely the hotel breakfast will do?”
The morning service at Only in Asakusa isn’t just any breakfast, it’s the gold standard. If you find yourself in Tokyo, try to escape the hotel breakfast routine and try a “coffee × toast” combo that’s becoming part of the Japanese cultural canon, truly the best of its kind.
Just right, ready for the next cup; coffee that leaves you spellbound
Only is located in Kappabashi, Asakusa. The area is a mecca for cooking appliance stores; the storefronts are packed with utensils for the discerning professional, items you won’t usually get to see. You’ll find yourself immersed in the real depths of the city.
And on the corner of one of its streets is Only, whose storefront isn’t to be beat by its neighbors. 20m away, you’ll already be met by the charry aroma of coffee beans; as you glance inside, you’ll see their catchphrase, “Masho no Aji” (Spellbinding Taste), and be brought to a halt.
’So ’spellbinding’, it always makes you want seconds’. The catchphrase actually came from a customer’s comments.
When you try it, prepare yourself for a unique sensation. You’re not hit with a powerful wave of umami; it’s not particularly bitter or acidic. It’s simply delicious, simply comforting.
You might not get it on your first sip. But as you take two, three sips, and spend some time in the shop, you’ll find yourself hooked. And before you know it, your cup is empty.
Together with the comfortable interior, you’ll find yourself asking for seconds, then still wanting a bit more. Consider yourself spellbound!
Their specialty coffee is blended using 6 different types of beans and roasted every day at the storefront.
Ultra-thick 7cm toast; magically light, fluffy and aromatic
You’re a few sips in. You’re thinking, “This is delicious! And I’m so comfortable…”
That’s when the ultra-thick toast arrives.
The bread is sourced from another thoroughbred of the Asakusa scene, the bakery “Pelican”. The toast is cut 7cm thick; you’ll see the margarine seeping in from the top, a sight for sore eyes.
As you tear a piece off, the delicious aroma hits your nostrils, sweet, wholesome and flavorful; toss that piece into your mouth, and you’ve cut the perfect start to your day.
Crunchy on the outside, the inside has a medium rare consistency. The fluffy interior has the right amount of bite, enough for you to savor and enjoy. The more you chew, the more you’ll be thrilled at how happy you are that you’re starting the day so, so well… This is an ode to breakfast, and a tribute to the delightful umami and flavor of wheat.
As you enjoy the bread and take another sip of your coffee, you’ll be back to being drawn in by the coffee’s charm. You’ll want to be here forever. You’re hooked.
The bread is available from the bakery, but the magic combination of coffee and bread can only be enjoyed at Only for breakfast.
It’s true that the history of “coffee × bread” in Japan is still short.
But if you’re stuck for options for breakfast in Tokyo, be sure to visit Only in Asakusa. A truly “spellbinding” experience awaits!
